Statewide Flex Alert calls for conservation

The California Independent System Operator (ISO), which monitors the electricity grid throughout California, has issued a statewide “Flex Alert” until 9 p.m. tonight and from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Because of scorching temperatures and increased energy use, electricity conservation is critical to prevent blackouts.

Officials say it’s essential to:
– Turn off all unnecessary lights
– Postpone using major appliances until after 6 p.m.
– If you must use an air conditioner, adjust it up to 78 degrees or higher

Through conservation efforts, Californians can save about 1,000 megawatts statewide, which is enough electricity to power 1 million households and equal to the output of two large power plants.
