Mayor’s Message: Consider giving back this holiday season

Mayor Bill Phillips talks about the spirit of the holidays in his final message of the year, which follows:
This is my favorite time of the year. It’s a time when I reflect on my blessings and how grateful I am for my family, health and to live in the best city on earth.  I am grateful for the opportunity to have spent this past year as your Mayor for the third time.  I am thankful for the residents and businesses and community organizations that make Aliso Viejo so special.During this holiday season, I hope you will take the time to really appreciate all that you have, especially with the recent tragedies and turmoil going on in our world.
I hope you will also consider giving back to our community and those in need.  There are many ways to do so. You can drop off non-perishable food items at City Hall to benefit South County Outreach.  This nonprofit organization works to prevent hunger and homelessness in our community and helps people help themselves.  You can give back by donating new, unwrapped toys for the Aliso Viejo Boys & Girls Club’s Operation Holiday Homework program.  The program rewards the kids for putting education first. With points earned for doing their homework, they are able to “shop” for gifts for their families.  Often these are the only gifts these families have under their Christmas tree.  In addition, you can help underserved children and teens by dropping off new, unwrapped toys and sports equipment at Fire Station 57 located at 57 Journey for the Spark of Love Toy Drive.
Other ways to give back include helping to build homes for those in need through Habitat For Humanity or volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.  Both are great organizations that make a difference in the lives of so many people, but they need the public’s help to thrive.   You can also join our City’s volunteer program and lend a hand at events like our Snow Fest on January 23rd or annual Founder’s Day Fair in October.   The opportunities for giving back this holiday season and year-round are plentiful.I thank you all for another incredible year in Aliso Viejo and wish you and your families very safe and happy holidays!
