As required by California State law, the City Council adopted the Orange County Code upon Aliso Viejo’s July 1, 2001 incorporation. The City is currently reviewing all Orange County ordinances to determine which ones need to be updated or re-written. Since that time, over 67 new City Ordinances have been adopted by the City Council.

As new City ordinances are written, approved and established by the City Council, they replace Orange County’s version. The review process will be complete within a few years, and the City of Aliso Viejo will adopt its own municipal code. At its meeting of December 8, 2004, the City Council appointed an Ad Hoc Working Group to review the County Ordinances, County Resolutions and existing City laws so that appropriate recommendations could be submitted to the City Council for consideration and approval.

The Municipal Code will ensure that the City of Aliso Viejo has laws that reflect current social norms.
